Jin knows better than to name the chickens. They're not pets, not creatures he can afford to be attached to. Still, he catches himself thinking of the old speckled hen as Clever Girl when he's not careful. When he comes up to the roof with the feed bag she greets him. When he comes up to collect eggs she supervises. But when he comes up to find a star attraction for the hot pot, the old speckled hen is nowhere to be found.

It's not like there are even that many places to hide up here: in the garden, behind the building heating unit, in the chicken coop itself.... But still, the count always comes up one hen short at dinnertime, and Jin picks out some less-wary member of the flock to come boost his protein intake. By this point the old speckled hen has to be past her prime as a layer, and she's eaten more feed than any of the rest of the flock. It would be only sensible to eat her.

But she knows when to hide, and he respects that. Another bird gets the ax, again, and Clever Girl and Jin both live another day.
