Lucky

Gotou wakes up late enough in the morning that sunlight filters in warm through the blinds, brightening the entire room to gold. It feels appallingly irresponsible. He's sore everywhere. It's wonderful.

He rolls over, toward the warmth of Date's body beside him. Date is still asleep, comfortably sprawled, one arm hanging off the edge of the bed. His skin glows bronze in the morning sun, the muscles of his back forming sleek contours that shift slightly with the rise and fall of his breath.

Gotou scoots closer. Now that he knows what he's looking for, he can find the unassuming little scar about an inch above Date's hairline, pink and shiny-smooth. It looks like such a little thing, so unimportant, but he knows what a terrible thing he's actually looking at, how close that harm came to being so much more. He drapes an arm over Date's waist and presses a gentle kiss to that scar.

"Mmmn, Gotou-chan, it's okay," Date says sleepily. His hand finds Gotou's, lacing their fingers together. "Don't worry."

"It was so close to not-okay," Gotou says. Sometimes he just wakes up so conscious of the fragility of life it gives him the shakes. "You got so lucky." He swallows hard, the next part coming out quiet since it feels so selfish. "I got so lucky."

Date tugs his hand up into kissing range and kisses his fingers, one at a time. "People get lucky every day," he says. "My turn came up when it really mattered, that's all." He rolls over so he can give Gotou a warm, fond smile. "More than once lately."

"You're trying to distract me," Gotou says.

Date nods. "Because it's fine now. Nothing to fret about anymore." He pulls Gotou into his arms, tucking Gotou's head against his shoulder. "I'm here," he says, sounding so grateful, so satisfied. "I'm going to live."
