Sometimes Ralph wished he knew how to edit his game’s code.

It was just frustrating, knowing that he could’ve been a different character. He could’ve been some kind of warrior who walked through cities punching bad guys; that would work, right? He was really good at punching stuff, and plenty of games were about good guys punching bad guys. Sure, maybe there’d just be one building shown of the whole place, but as long as the players had fun, who would care?

Or maybe he could’ve just tweaked the backstory a little bit, to make him into the hero. He could’ve turned the condo into some kind of twisted corporate headquarters, with Gene as the CEO and poor Felix as his brainwashed handyman. Why not make himself the heroic bystander who’d had his land taken by the crooked CEO and had jumped up to tear the tower down himself? He might even be able to change things so that he was the main character, and the players would get to wreck things instead of fix ‘em, for a change.

It was a really nice idea... but a really stupid one. Nobody knew the secret access system to the games’ code. It was the best-kept secret in the arcade! No, he was stuck with what he had, what he was good at, and he’d never be anything but a bad guy. Not in his game.

He sighed, turning over in his crushed-brick bed. Some of the other bad guys had been asking him to join their meetings for a while now. Maybe it was time to go, let some of these feelings out.
