It was late at night when you first saw her, standing in the middle of a cocktail bar and laughing at a joke that you doubt was very amusing. But she laughed at it just right, teeth bright against red lips, her brilliant blue dress falling over her curves like a waterfall against dark rocks. She is the most beautiful person you'd ever met.

You don't know her name; she never speaks of herself. So you call her Maria, because what other name could you possibly give her? trail after her, watching as she samples the fine drinks and nibbles on food that would drain your accounts to nothing with a single serving. She enjoys fine things, and everyone watches her to see what they should order; once she compliments a drink, the bar will sell out of it in a matter of minutes. Everyone want to know what she will do next.

Many declare that they are in love with her. But you are not in love, because love is something that can be expressed by choice. This is obsession, a need to be close to her that overwhelms you. She makes you feel like she is the work of art and the world, including you, is the negative space around her, made to highlight her beauty. You want nothing more than to be closer, to make her shine even more. This is not a choice; this is an imperative.

Seeing her makes this entire bar scene seem new and bright. It makes you remember when you once longed for something better than this. You know you aren't the only one - she has never belonged to a single person, and you do not think she ever will. You wonder, if you had the chance, if all of you would close in on her, overwhelm her with your nothingness, until she was gone entirely. The world would be missing something irreplacable then, and you wonder if you would be sorry.

Still, it's a chance you're willing to take, to be close to her.
