Yelena was late. Kate had gotten the text that said she was running late five minutes ago. It wasn't as if Kate was being stood up or anything. Not that this was a date. It was just drinks. That was all. Maybe some appetizers. Not that Kate would have minded if this were a date. It's just that it wasn't. She flagged down the waiter and ordered a plate of onion rings, and a basket of jalapeño poppers to go with her second drink. Waiting was hard.

Twenty minutes later, Yelena joined her at the corner booth. "Sorry, I'm late." She picked up a jalapeño popper, sniffed it, and took a bite. "Mmmm...this is good."

Elbow on the table, Kate leaned her cheek on her palm and sipped the last of her drink through a pink bendy straw. It was so sweet that she could barely taste the alcohol. Was this her second or her third drink? She shook her head slightly. "Did you want to order a drink?"

Yelena made a sweeping gesture at the table. "Kate Bishop, it looks like you've already had enough for both of us."

Huh, there were more empty glasses on the table than Kate thought there should be. Had she really had four drinks while waiting? Had she been that nervous? Well, she wasn't nervous now. "This should totally be a date."

Yelena smiled and shook her head. "No, I don't think so."

"Why not?"

"Well, I wouldn't want to be late for our first date, would I?"

Kate sat up straight and pushed her empty glass aside. "Oh, good answer."


Kate clung to Yelena as they made the trek up the stairs to Kate's apartment. "We should go on an adventure together."

"Okay."

Kate handed her the map she'd found.

Yelena frowned. "And what do you want me to do with this?"

"It's a treasure map." Kate pointed to what looked like a brown blob shaped kinda like a heart. "We should totally be treasure hunters together."

"Your enthusiasm is cute but this is a used napkin, not a treasure map."

"But adventures-" Kate whined.

"Don't worry we can have adventures without a treasure map."

Kate pouted. She liked her treasure map. Not as much as she liked Yelena though.

Yelena handed her a bottle. "Drink this."

Kate took the clear plastic bottle. "Water?"

"It'll help with the hangover."

"But I'm not hung over." Kate tried unscrewing the cap and the bottle dropped from her hands.

Yelena picked the water up from the floor, unscrewed the cap, and handed it back to her. "You will be tomorrow."

Kate took a big gulp of the water, paused, and took another. She hadn't even realized she was so thirsty. "I don't usually drink much alcohol but you were late and I was so nervous."

"Nervous?" Yelena brushed the hair out of Kate's face. "Did you think I was going to hurt you?"

The thought hadn't even occurred to her. Weird. "No, I was nervous because I like you." Oops, had she said that out loud?

Unfazed, Yelena took her arm. "I like you too, Kate Bishop."

Kate thought that maybe Yelena might kiss her but instead, she led her to the bed, helped her take off her shoes, and tucked her in. Ignoring the way the room was spinning, Kate closed her eyes and sighed. "I like the way you say my name."

Yelena chuckled softly. "You get some sleep, Kate Bishop. I'll be back in the morning to make breakfast. Maybe then we can have our date."

Eyes still closed, Kate smiled as she drifted off to sleep.
