I watched through the window as my Holmes tended to his hives. It was a crisp, cold morning, heralding the end of summer and the passage into autumn. I loved to watch him at his work, seeing how gracefully he still moved.

The whistle of the kettle interrupted my thoughts. I set some tea to brew, then began making toast. Holmes would be cold when he came in and I had learned from long experience how best to warm him. As I was spreading honey on the freshly made toast, he came through the door. I could see that he was shivering slightly as he removed his bee suit, rubbing his hands together to try to get some warmth back into them.

“I have an ideal remedy,” I said with a smile. “Go and sit on the sofa.”

He did so, and I followed him with the tea and toast on a tray. I sat beside him and covered both of us with his old blanket.

“Thank you,” he said when I passed him his tea and the plate of toast. “You always know how to look after me, my dear.”

I slipped an arm around him and gave him a gentle squeeze. “I’m well practised in the art, my love.”

He chuckled. “I perceive I have interrupted you from writing. You have fresh ink stains on your hands.”

I smiled. “I can continue later. I would far rather sit with you.”
