Ray couldn’t sleep. He never really could when Ben was away, so he sat on the couch with Diefenbaker at his side.

Rubbing the wolf’s head, Ray sighed. “I know buddy, I miss him as well. I don’t know why the Ice Queen drags him to these things, why not take Turnbull?”

Glancing at the telephone Ray wondered if it would be OK to give Ben a ring at dark thirty in the morning.

Just as he’d had that thought the phone rang. Ray smiled as he picked it up, knowing who was on the other end.

Ray spoke just before the voice on the other end had chance to. “Hey Ben. Can’t sleep either, huh?”

Ben chuckled, “How did you know that it was me?”

Ray smiled and clutched the phone to his ear. “Ben, if it was work they would have called the cell. Sooo…you missing us up there in Freezerland?”

Laughing lightly Ben shook his head. “Ray, it’s Ottawa in July, it’s hardly freezing. It is actually rather hot, even at night.”

Sitting back into the couch Ray talked suggestively. “So it’s hot, huh? So does that mean you are sleeping in the nude?”

Ben let out an astonished reply. “Ray, honestly! I am on a trip with my superior officer. It would not be appropriate to sleep in the nude, as you say.”

Laughing now at Ben’s ramble Ray could see Ben blushing in his head. Ray replied, still laughing, “I’m kidding. Is everything OK for you up there at the conference thingy?”

Ben sat on a chair by the window overlooking the river that flowed outside the hotel. “Ray to be honest, I am not sure why Inspector Thatcher needed me here. Most days so far I have been told to go visit the sights rather than sit in on the conference. The only time she wanted me by her side was at the Gala dinner.”

Ray frowned now. He was angry at Ben getting used like that. “You serious Ben? Get on the next flight out of there, you hear me? She can’t use you like some bit of arm candy! That is not right.”

Sighing, Ben rubbed his forehead and spoke again. “I intend to, Ray. I am due to fly out first thing in the morning. Inspector Thatcher didn’t seem to care when I told her that I was leaving. In fact she said that it was a good idea because it would be less money out of the budget.”

Ray smiled, “You’re coming home. What time is your flight in? I’ll pick you up.”

Smiling himself now Ben replied, “That’s not necessary Ray, I can…”

Ray interrupted, “Let me say that again Ben. What time is your flight due in at? I will pick you up.”

Laughing now Ben answered with fondness in his voice, “I am due in at six-thirty a.m. Ray.

Ray smiled even bigger now, “Good. OK. Get some shut eye and I will see you in the morning. I love you and I miss you, Ben.”

Ben leaned forward as if he could get closer to Ray. He could see Ray’s smiling face in his mind. “I love and miss you as well, Ray.”

They both hung up their phones, excited at the prospect of seeing each other again.
