Water covers seventy per cent of planet earth
Yet we concentrate on what’s on the land
Do we wonder what that seventy per cent is worth
Or restrict our view to what we have to hand
Do we care?

The biggest creatures are those found underneath the spray
The largest of them all the magnificent blue whale
Yet our shipping ignores the whale superhighway
With noise, chemicals, and strikes from steam and sail
Do we care?

Beneath the water lie innumerable graves
Explorers, natural disasters, those killed in wars
Plus others fleeing oppression and trafficked slaves
All but a few forgotten by fancy sightseeing tours
Do we care?

In other countries floods consume the land
As rivers cannot contain what flows to them
But building carries on with housing grand
And nothing can the concrete-cover stem
Do we care?

In far off places islands vanish beneath the sea
The occupants forced to leave their only homes
And neighbours wonder when they’ll have to flee
To escape the encroaching water and the foam
Do we care?

So what do we do? I have no magic wand
No easy answers, and no quick solution
No surefire way for any to respond
And yet, there is one simple resolution
We must care!
