Fangfei remembers dying. The crack of the shovel against her skull brought darkness, yes, but in the darkness she remembers the choking pressure of the mud squeezing her chest, the will to breathe slowly leaching from her. She remembers dying.

She also remembers the moment her hand broke through the lip of the grave like breaching the surface of a frozen lake. The fire that burned through her, knowing that life lay mere inches away.

She wonders: If she had been possessed that night by the barefoot ghosts of the mountain, would she even know? Would her life be different?
